An-ten-nae presents Acid Crunk Volume 3!

Tag: an-ten-nae

Muti Music superstar Ant-ten-nae is back in action with his wildly popular "Acid Crunk" series, featuring delightful never-before-heard selections of midtempo and glitch-hop from both well-known and up-and-coming producers.

Tracklist with reviews:

  • Soom T & Disrupt – Dirty Money (An-ten-nae Remix): Strong and funky sporting a nice bouncey midtempo beat and distorted leads. The lyrics were cool, but I found them to be a bit too persistent for my tastes. I think the vocalist doesn't need your dirty money, but I can't be too sure ;)
  • Professor Nalepa vs It’s Not Over Quebec – Unrest: A nice dramatic and cinematic piece lying somewhere between dubstep and glitch-hop. It rocks some lovely guitar-work and orchestrals.
  • Thriftworks - Get The Lectroid (Rook Remix): This may be one of my favorite tunes on the album. Has some wickedly dramatic squelchy lead-action going on. The song has sort of a similar vibe to Pretty Lights. The jazzy piano intro is a great touch. This may be one of my favorite tracks on the album.
  • Knight Riderz – Turn It Up: Glitch-Hop in the classic sense. Sounds pretty much exactly like older stuff from The Glitch Mob: a simple yet dramatic hip-hop beat with an in-your-face main lead. This is top-notch production quality and will certainly gain some fans, though I personally find the style of having a simple heavy lead over heavy beats to be a bit overdone. Nice, though.
  • Marty Party – Sassy: Really liking the strong progressive lead on this one, which is balanced out nicely by the gangster lead and cheesy old-synth brass hit. I'm not one for pop-rap patches, but it works decently here.
  • An-ten-nae – So High: Loving the arpped intro on this one. The track then brings in some chopped/glitched metal guitar shred samples to the forefront. A fun track, though I'm personally not much into the metal guitar sound.
  • Lorn – Toilet: Minimal. Distorted. Dubby. Filthy. One could have a lot of fun with this track in Ableton.
  • Lunice – Solution: Things get a bit hyphy. Cool synth work, but the patches were a bit dry (fx-wise) for taste.
  • Love & Light – Funkin Lovely: Thie one has a cool epic cheese-trance intro that builds and drops into a sweet squelchy-midtempo jumper. Very Opiuo-esque. There's some really cool acoustic guitar-work that kicks into play in the middle. Awesome over all. Another favorite.
  • Blunt Instrument – Battle Toad: It's good to see a track from this up-and-coming Australian Glitch-Hop duo. This is really well-produced, with some killer squelchy synth work. The sound in this is a cross between Opiuo and A.Skillz. Delicious.
  • Mimosa – Customs: Some decent glitch-hop from Mimosa that rocks some classic-sounding Mimosa melodies. The synth-lead work on this was a bit too thin/dry for taste, but I really enjoyed the backing pads and the reverb bell hits.
  • Sidecar Tommy – Bump Box: Really cool hyphy beat. Good edit work. Ran into the same taste-issue again of the synth work sounding a bit too thin/dry for taste.
  • Random Rab – The Desert Flux: The synths are rocking a neat 80s vibe on this one (a little dry, but works well here), that play nicely with some filtered pretty backing female vocals. The overall track turns into a nicely building and flowing glitch-hop track. Very progressive. It's as if Jody Wisternoff (Way Out West) busted out a midtempo track.
  • Opiuo & Jay Wikid – Panty Slingshot: I had high expectations coming into this: "Opiou" "Jay Wikid" and "Panty Slingshot" just sounds too epic. Did not disappoint. There's some classic Opiou synth work in here, and sort of an acoustic rock 4-to-the-floor beat. The backing phased/flanged work was actually the hidden star here in my opinion, which I wish came in a bit more.
  • NastyNasty – Priceless: This song is killer, and has the most impressive synth work of all the tracks on this release: very diverse and ornate. I found this to be highly enjoyable to listen to on headphones.
  • FuzZ – Doom: A gnarly epic distorted closer of a track. It's extremely slow and epic 4-to-the-floor. As an album track, it's a good closer, but doesn't seem as dance-floor friendly as the rest of the release.

All-in-all I give this release an upstanding 4/5 stars! In general a great compilation overall. My choice tunes are Thriftwork's "Get the Lectroid (Rook Remix)," Love & Light's "Funkin Lovely," Blunt Instrument's "Battle Toad," Random Rab's "The Desert Flux," and NastyNasty's "Priceless."

An-ten-nae Presents Acid Crunk Vol. 2 (Muti Music)

An-ten-nae presents Acid Crunk Vol. 2 is an essential component to the musical lives of those who love West Coast sound. What West Coast sound exactly IS, no one can really say- but listen to this album and you can practically hear the crushing waves of the Pacific Ocean, the strange sizzle of city streets, and the hyped-up yet laid back ethos that pervades the culture in this slice of the world.

Acid Crunk Vol. 2 never relies on an accelerated tempo to deliver its energy or to make the dance floor move, yet accomplishes both feats with flying colors. It has a bass backbone made of steel from which it draws its strength, allowing for exploratory extremities and a head of feral fire. The compilation album features some of the most talented producers in the world today in the realm of dubstep, glitch hop, experimental hip hop and all of their mutant cousins. It is a cocktail of styles- a Long Island Iced Tea, actually, with each component just as strong and kick-ass as the next. When you finish it, your brain will be buzzing and your limbs will be loose. And you will want another round. Read more »
